A Northern NSW property on Australia’s east coast is undergoing a transformation from cattle grazing land to rainforest. It is a generous gesture by the site’s new owners to reinstate a bygone landscape, a vegetal and architectural vision that will take generations to realise.

The owners intend to not only live amongst the beautiful growing setting, but to manage the rainforest as a wild orchard or vineyard. The hardwoods will be tended to maturity and then selectively harvested, the long lifespan of the trees meaning a wait of between 50 and 300 years before the first crop will be realised.

The rainforest timber’s unhurried growth has influenced our approach for inserting architecture in the site. All the buildings being designed respond to the notion of a 300 year lifecycle.

The structures, both for habitation and working, are endowed with a sense of permanence. They have been conceived as ruins in the landscape; ancient concrete and stone structures that have been unearthed and retrofitted for comfortable habitation with crisp glass and steel details.

Manly 2015

Program – Strategic Planning, Urban Design, Community Buildings
Location – Manly, NSW
Site Area – 140,000 sqm
Client – Manly Council
Collaborators – McGregor Coxall, Hill PDA, Altus Page Kirkland, GTA Consulting, Bitzios Consulting
Status – Public Exhibition

Manly today is a vibrant bustling beachside town and tourist destination with a people friendly atmosphere thanks largely to the efforts of our forefathers who chose this setting and established Manly specifically with a village character.

We have an opportunity to develop this character further and bring Manly into the 21C as a contemporary compact village. A place that combines living, working and leisure, a place with an appropriate density and diverse cultural landscape, a place with all the services required for day to day living, and a place that connects with its beautiful natural setting.

A key theme in advancing the village concept will be the continued pedestrianisation of the town centre. Through this initiative, Manly has an opportunity to become Australia’s only pedestrianised town centre with carparking facilities provided on the periphery.

Pedestrianised town centres are the hallmark of many European villages and city centres and it is the quality of the public domain and the vitality resulting from pedestrians filling the streets that make these places such great places to visit.

Through intelligent investment and sustainable design, we can achieve improved livability, prosperity and sustainability.

It will be a place with enhanced economic activity and convenience of access, improved parking provisions and pedestrian inter-connectivity, a better range of services and employment opportunities and a place better positioned to draw upon the amenity of the extraordinary natural setting.

A pedestrianised town centre framed by a ‘Beach Terrace’ to the East, the Harbour Gateway to the South, and a ‘Grand Boulevard’ to the West will strengthen the existing international reputation of Manly as an iconic locale with an outstanding built and natural environment.

Choi Ropiha Fighera are collaborating with McGregor Coxall on Bringelly Memorial Gardens. A unique project that provides for natural burials, internment of ashes and social gatherings within a conservation woodland setting.

Bringelly Memorial Gardens sits within a Cumberland Plain Woodland ecosystem. The Cumberland plain woodland is an iconic Sydney landscape that is increasingly under threat as the city expands. Itaoui’s vision is to regenerate and protect the flora and fauna of this landscape by providing a burial option for people who want to leave an environmental legacy for future generations.

Gallery 4A

Program – Art Gallery, Urban Event Space
Location – Sydney, NSW
Floor Area – 565 sqm
Client – Asian Australian Artists' Association Inc
Collaborators – Root Projects, MBM
Visualisation – Doug & Wolf
Status – Preliminary Concept

Choi Ropiha Fighera has provided preliminary concepts for 4A's capital expansion.

4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art has a unique position within Australia’s contemporary art world with a distinctive focus on ‘living Asian cultures’, the changing global context and the engagement of new generations of Asian Australians with contemporary art. The strategy exploits 4A's unique attributes and the potential latent in its location.

Firstly, the concept expands the gallery space to allow 4A to hold larger and more complex exhibitions and events. Secondly, it is conceived to readily expand out to the surrounding street. This expands 4A’s profile and facilitates community engagement. It also serves City of Sydney’s interest in activating the public domain and its laneways. Thirdly, by becoming a public ‘hub’ for Sydney’s diverse Asian community, it can assist Sydney capitalise on the unique cross-cultural Asian character that is already part of the city. And in-turn, help Sydney become a key voice of New Asia.

Hidden Place Studio & Residence

Program – Residence & Studio
Location – Fairlight, NSW
Floor Area – 140 sqm
Client – Private
Collaborators – Northern Beaches Consulting Engineers, Boston Blyth Fleming
Builder – Mallinger Construction
Status – Built

The Hidden Place project is about the creation of a small dwelling and studio upon a seemingly implausible development site that lies land-locked behind main street shops on Sydney Road.

The site has neither street frontage nor street presence and is only accessible via two narrow Right of Ways - one leading in from the east, the other from the west. Furthermore, the site has small proportions (5.8m x 24m) but perhaps most constraining are the encircling two and three storey buildings that have an overbearing presence upon the site.

So as a development opportunity, the site had on the one hand a general lack of amenity with no outlook and privacy issues to contend with, but on the other, the site had a floor space allowance of 1:1 that was there for the taking.
The design starts from a position of 100% site coverage over two storeys from which a series of voids are carved out to create self contained outlook and to provide ventilation and a source of light. Furthermore, a contextual argument is made to exceed the height limit and shift a large chunk of the second floor footprint into a third level on the southern portion of the site to create a full width courtyard at the first floor level.

The scheme weaves together the program for studio space, parking and a small home with a combination of tiny courtyards, vertical voids and skylights to build a composition with self contained amenity. At the ground level, the site is densely packed with studio spaces, bedrooms and parking with two 1m wide courtyards as the only source of light and outlook. At the first floor level, living spaces are located on the southern part of the site with outlook north across the central courtyard to the studio space juxtaposed at the northern end.

The Master bedroom and ensuite sit atop the living space on the southern part of the site and manages a district view whilst the additional height blends with nearby three storey buildings to the south.

It is a project that has revealed value in a site where previously there seemed to be none. From the beginning, the land was lowly valued because the prospect of development seemed so implausible. Even with an approved DA the value of the development stayed compromised by the physical realities of the surrounds. Only now as construction is drawing to a close is the full value of the development being understood with real estate valuers estimating returns as comparable with conventional street front housing.

The design exhibits a preciseness in its use of light and space to create a spatially rich home and studio on this heavily constrained and hidden site.

Bassett Duplex Development

Program – Two Dual Occupancy Development
Location – Mona Vale, NSW
Floor Area – 970 sqm
Client – Private
Collaborators – Simpson Design Associates, QS Plus, ExParrot
Status – Development Application Complete

This project is sited on the Mona Vale headland with expansive views over Mona Vale Beach to the south. The view however is not apparent at street level and this asset is withheld from occupants until well after entering the building interior. This dramatises the impact of entering the key living areas where the view is finally revealed to the occupant.

A further design challenge for this project was to find a way to give south facing dwellings access to direct sun and warmth from the north. This is achieved by providing a north-facing skylight near the centre of the building to trap the warm winter sun.

In addition, the garaging for the development was placed partially buried at the rear of the site to enable the south facing frontage for each building to be preserved for useable floor space.

Finally, the pair of duplexes have a reasonably large building mass when compared with other family homes in the street. The technique used to deal with this scale issue was to form the buildings as 2 level podiums with a setback roof element for the top level.

City North Substation

Program – Substation Facade, Awning, Cafe
Location – Sydney, NSW
Floor Area – 1,100 sqm
Client – Energy Australia
Status – Competition, 2nd Place

The City North Substation project presented the unusual challenge of designing facades for a building in which the design of the body of the building including the building structure and substation contents, is already complete. The challenge had the added constraint of having contain the facades within a 150mm deep zone surrounding the body of the building.

Given these unusual circumstances, our proposition seeks to make use of and express the completed functional utility structure whilst overlaying an urban design strategy that seats the building into its city context.

Hence the engineering form of the building remains evident in the facade treatments with the patterning of large air intake grilles boldly expressed on each of the facades. The random patterning of these openings is amplified with an additional layer of different sized glazed panels that provide a textural contrast but reinforce the large scale patterning of the building.
The exception to this approach is the north facade where additional facade treatments respond to the building’s northerly orientation and pivotal location at the bend in Sydney’s Western Distributor.

Here the facade is designed as a light sculpture that responds to changes in light conditions both as the sun moves throughout the day, and at night as solar powered luminares are activated. Composed of frameless glazing with a ‘dimpled’ gold anodised backdrop, light and shade cause a complex interplay between the two surfaces in which the appearance of the facade varies according to the light conditions and the angle of view.

Furthermore, the use of the brickwork as a ‘skin’ that folds over the building on the east and west sides sets up the drama of the northern facade where the crystalline glass facade is revealed as the principal building feature.

At street level, shallow insertions into the facade contain either changeable tenancies or displays that activate the building at pedestrian level and give a human dimension to this otherwise quiescent structure. Also, a small public space at the north facade to the building works in concert with these tenancies to create a ‘public place’ that contributes to the life of the city. At the Sussex Street corner, a small café could partially spill into the space and become a place to meet for coffee, whilst racks of new or second hand books could be stored and sold from within 600mm deep shelving to the remaining length of the facade.

The public space works both as a punctuation in the experience of the journey to and from the King Street Wharf precinct, but also as a destination for city dwellers to meet and socialise. By removing the grove of existing fig trees, light returns to the footpath and rather than extending the darkness and heaviness of the flyover, becomes a place that enjoys sunlight and invites occupation and activity.

Choi Ropiha Fighera completed a full commercial fitout with the re-launch of Cranium Hair Salon in Manly. The project organises the salon as 3 primary spaces - reception, the main cutting studio, and the more intimate hair spa room. A new glazed shopfront sharpens the presentation of the salon to the passerby whilst internally, each space has its own architectural treatment to assist the spatial definition. Collectively these measures combine to give Cranium an enhanced presence and identity.

The project received 2009 AHA National Award, Best Hair Salon.
